Just as the job market is holding its own – as demonstrated by last week’s relatively upbeat employment report for May – so too are consumers showing more resilience than expected. Indeed, reports that higher payroll taxes this year would spell the demise of household spending are proving to be premature, to say the least. True, there is a tight link between these two key drivers of economic growth, since the more jobs that are created the more income there is to spend.
